Rent A Cop

Saw a few of these on the way back from the mountains, plywood two dimensional cops directing traffic towards other lanes. This is a pretty popular model, with one hand raised holding a big flashing orange light, and the other swinging back and forth with a smaller flashing red light. Not very convincing, but makes driving through construction work a whole lot funner. If only more cops were made of plywood...

Mount Fuji

Also had a clear view of Mount Fuji from Yatsugatake Kogen. See it?

First Snow

Saw some of this season's first snow in Yamanashi yesterday. Not too much, just a little left on the side of the road.

Whale Wars

Seven part, hour long weekly documentary series follows the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society on their 2007/08 Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign. On Animal Planet. I'm so disappointed I can't see this. If anyone has it recorded and wants to send me a copy, I'd be happy to send you something nice in return.

Ryugashi Cavern

Some pics of Ryugashi Cavern, located near Lake Hamana. Lots of the usual stalactites and stalagmites, as well as a huge underground waterfall (which I couldn't really photograph as it was in a narrow portion of the caverns).

Lake Hamana

Just got back from Lake Hamana. According to Wikipedia, "Lake Hamana in Shizuoka Prefecture is Japan's tenth largest lake. It spans the boundaries of the cities of Hamamatsu and Kosai and the town of Arai." Besides the lake we also visited the small towns nearby and did some cave dwelling.

Tokyo Disney Sea

Spent the day after my birthday at Disney Sea. A thunder storm came through in the evening, but other than that had a good time. Rode the usual attractions and did a lot of walking.

Space Room

This is the Space Room at the Queen Elizabeth in Chiba. The Queen Elizabeth is a "love hotel" located a few minutes from Tokyo Disneyland. The hotel includes themed rooms all at reasonable rates. With an online coupon and 10% off with a member's card, we ended up paying a little under 6,000 yen. That's a fraction of what you'd pay at one of the resort hotels in the area. The Space Room features spaceship bed, large plasma tv, jacuzzi bath with tv, coffee maker, black lights with stars and planets everywhere, and super detailed airbrushed space wall. You can't go wrong at that price.

I have two hand painted pieces in today's "Saturday @ Phillips" Contemporary & Urban Art Auctions, happening in New York. The "Toy Art" section of the catalog is growing, featuring several Japanese figures. There's even a San Diego Comic Con version Tokoji Seijin in there.

PHILLIPS de PURY & COMPANY

Late Night Visitor

This guy wandered onto our campsite the last night we were in Tanzawa. He hung out for a while, ate some bugs, then slowly headed back into the rocks. We found him the next morning relaxing just a few steps from where we saw him.
